Erected by the Giudici from Cagliari in the first half of 1200, the castle was occupied by the Pisans in 1324 when it was conquered by the Aragonese led by Almirante Francisco Carroz. In 1363 the King of Aragon proclamed Berengario Carroz Earl of Quirra.
The Castle was besieged several times without ever being conquered. The mythical figure in the history of the castle is Donna Violante Carroz who legend describes her as a greedy and murderess and dead falling from the highest precipice of the Castle. It is said that she would have hidden a golden frame in the Mountain’s belly.
